About Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood

Prominently situated on the Gribeodov Canal, you can see the majestic Cathedral towering with bright colorful domes known as the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood. It was constructed between 1883 and 1907 during the reign of Alexander III as a memorial to his father Alexander II. This church marks the spot where Emperor Alexander II was fatally wounded in an assassination attempt made on him in 1881. 

 Greatly influenced by the Baroque and Neoclassical styles, this particular church, that has been open for more than 100 years. brings back medieval Russian architecture containing over 7500 square meters of colorful mosaics splattered along the building’s interior walls. Exploring this particular building not only allows one to experience the sensation of walking through medieval Russia’s history but also to admire the vast array of decorative arts incomparable to any other building, and is an important landmark of St Petersburg.

How to reach

Metro: Nevsky Prospekt

Bus: Start from Chapaeva St and get down at Letniy Garden. Then walk about 8 minutes to the cathedral

By walking it will take 13 minutes from the city center

By taxi from Saint Petersburg to Church of the Savior on Blood will take 2 minutes and the fare for a taxi for one-way is 420 Rouble

Tips

  • Buy tickets online to avoid the long lines during the peak season
  • The church now serves as a museum and not for worship
  • Most areas of the church are wheelchair accessible. There are ramps at the entrance and exit
  • The church is open to visitors daily except on Wednesdays
  • To avoid the crowd visit early in the morning
  • The last admission is at 6:00 p.m.
  • In addition, for 200 Rouble you can rent an audio guide in the same cathedral
  • Pets are not allowed
  • Heavy luggage and bags may not be permitted inside
  • The cathedral is open until 10:30 p.m. during summer (May 1st to September 30th)
