One of the three important art museums in Madrid's Golden Triangle of Art, the collection of Museo-Thyssen Bomemisza is unique in its diversity. Where Prado and El Reina demonstrate depths in the work of a period or of individual artists, Museo-Thyssen Bomemisza provides a glimpse into a range of the history of art spanning 8 centuries.
This is due to how the collection was assembled. It started as the private collection of Baron Heinrich Thyssen-Bomemisza. The Baron brought art from around the world, including many pieces from wealthy Americans during the Great Depression. The collection was expanded by Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bomemisa, the original Baron's son. Eventually amassing 1600 paintings, this private collection was the second-largest private collection in the world. The collection grew so large that the Baron's Lugano, Switzerland estate was no longer big enough to house it. When the city of Lugano refused to help, Baron Thyssen-Bomemisza built a larger gallery to house the collection, and the city of Madrid stepped in with space near the Prado and El Reina museums. This impressive museum opened in 1992.
