The history of Santa Iglesias Cathedral Primada de Toledo is full of drama, intrigue and a dastardly deed or two. The site where the cathedral sits was long the site of a house of worship. It alternated between Muslim mosque and Catholic church with the corresponding occupations of Toledo. A church was consecrated on this site in 6th century, but was torn down some time later and a mosque erected in its place. The Catholics later reconquered Toledo. In order to capture the city without bloodshed, King Alfonso VI promised to conserve and respect the Muslim customs and religion, including preserving the mosque. But the king's wife Constance, had other ideas. She had the mosque seized, created a bell tower and installed an altar to create a Christian church.
Construction of the Cathedral that currently sits on this holy site started in 1226 under the direction of Ferdinand III and was completed in 1493, with the completion of the vaults of the nave. When you visit this high gothic Cathedral, be sure to visit the sacristy, which holds one of the Cathedral's great treasures. Here you will find a gallery of art featuring the old masters including Velazques, Goya, El Greco, and Raphael, among others.
