Salamanca is sometimes called the Golden City due to its sandstone buildings like those found in Plaza Mayor. Built from 1729-1755, Plaza Mayor was not always the public square as it was used as a bull-fighting ring up until 1992. The bull-ring-turned public square is now considered by many to be one of Spain's most beautiful plazas. Locals come here to relax and socialize.
