About Catedral de Santiago de Compostela

Each year, thousands of faithful Christians make a pilgrimage, or Camino, to the Catedral de Santiago Compostela. Along with Jerusalem and Rome, Santiago Compostela is one of the three most important Christian pilgrimages. This is because it is purported to be the burial place of St. James the great, an apostle in the inner circle of Jesus Christ.

Originally a small chapel was built over the remains of St.James. But as many people made the pilgrimage, Alfonso III commissioned a larger church to be built, but this church was razed by Muslim troops in the 10th century, and it was not until 1075 that construction began on a Romanesque church, the start of the structure that now stands in the spot, the Cathedral de Santiago combines Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architecture — a consequence of it being added to over the ages. Catedral de Santiago de Compostela is a UNESCO world heritage site and an important holy site for Christianity.
