About Convento de Cristo

Our next attraction will feel like it is straight out of the pages of a Dan Brown mystery thriller novel. Set against a very charming backdrop in Tomar, was the headquarters of the formidable Catholic military, the Knights of Templar. What happens next isn’t an imaginary plot of a novel, but a fact in history. The Knights of Templar were believed to have used the medieval castle of the Convent of Christ as their secret headquarters. Although the castle was called a convent, it was constructed in 1160 to serve as a headquarter for the Pope’s formidable army. However, it was feared that the Pope was getting too powerful. Due to this, the Knights of Templar were decommissioned. In various countries, they were burnt at the stake! However, the King of Portugal decided to rename the Knights as Order of Christ, and have them under his command. In later years, the Knights were completely converted to a religious order and were demilitarized. Over the years, the architecture of the convent has been inspired by numerous styles including the Romanesque, the Gothic, and the Renaissance. An extremely beautiful and scenic attraction, the Convent of Christ attracts locals and tourists alike. It has been converted into a museum. What’s more, the lavish architectural design of the Manueline chapel is seen only in the country of Portugal. How can you miss seeing this with your own eyes? In 1983, it was included in UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites.
