About Bom Jesus do Monte

Allow yourself to be proverbially purified by experiencing the cathartic devotion of pilgrims. A demonstration of their devotion was encouraged by the number of stairs they could climb on their knees. More so, imagine their plight on having to climb a 116-meter long stairway! The admirable dedication of the believers can be witnessed at the famous Bom Jesus do Monte or Good Jesus of the Mount sanctuary in Tenões, Braga. It is an extremely popular site of pilgrimage in the city. Dating back to the 14th century, the sanctuary was built at a time when pilgrimages in strenuous physical conditions became a way to demonstrate devotion. At that time, devotees were encouraged to climb up to the Bom Jesus do Monte on their knees to feel the pain of Christ on his way to his death. What gives this monumental site an edge is its Baroque-style stairway that is a 116-meter long climb. The steps are made of granite and have a white façade. It is believed that there are numerous stories associated with each set of zigzag stairways.

The bottom-most staircase is dedicated to the Stations of the Cross, which have numerous terracotta figures depicting the final chapters of Christ’s life to his crucifixion. The next staircase is called the Stairway of the Five Senses. It comprises a fountain where water is flowing from the ears, eyes, nose, and mouth of figurative characters. It is dedicated to each of the five senses. The last set of the stairway called the Three Theological Virtues: Faith, Hope, and Charity. It has three fountains dedicated to each of these virtues.
