About Panorama of the Battle of Racławice

You can literally stand in the middle of the Battle of Racławice. The Panorama of the Battle of Racławice is a 342-foot circular mural 45 feet high in Wrocław, Poland.

What is unique about it is that it is the oldest in Poland, painted in 1884. It depicts scenes of the battle from different angles so real you’ll think you were there in person. It was created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Kościuszko Insurrection when Poland defeated the Russians. The woven canvas was a custom order made in Brussels. The building that houses the panorama is a rotunda built in Vienna. For many years the panorama was hidden because Poland was once again under Soviet influence.

Visually stimulating, tourists can also listen to the history of the painting and the events that inspired it.

Tips

  • Headsets with commentary in 17 languages (including English, French, Russian, Spanish, German and even Esperanto) are available at no extra charge.
  • Presentations are held every half hour.
  • The audioguide commentary runs in a fixed order and the audio is played when you are near a particular stop in the 360 Panorama. It is therefore not possible to re-play or re-visit particular parts of the commentary. For example, if one part of the painting is very crowded and you want to view a section of the canvas that doesn't have too many people standing in front of it, you can't listen to the commentary for that uncrowded section, you can only view the painting in the prescribed order.
  • It can get quite crowded during the holiday season so make sure to get your tickets online in advance.
  • You are permitted to film and take photographs (without flashlights or a tripod) on the viewing platform, free of charge.
  • Please maintain decorum and ensure that you don't disturb other visitors.
  • Please follow museum etiquette and do not touch the painting. You might be fined!
