About Batalha Monastery

Portugal has much to boast about and rightfully so. One such example is the Monastery of Saint Mary of the Victory standing tall and proud in Batalha. This is an absolute must-see location on every traveller’s bucket list. It is believed to be one of the most enthralling attractions in the Iberian Peninsula. One can’t help but adore the beautiful medieval stained-glass windows of the monastery. The elegance of these windows can be appreciated in the Chapel and the Chapter Hall. During the day, they cast gentle colorful spells inside the Chapel and capture everyone’s hearts. Apart from these, the other sections of the monastery that are open to visitors include the kitchen, the dormitory, and the dining room.

Also known as the Monastery of Batalha, it has an interesting story on how it came to be built. The monastery was constructed in honour of the Virgin Mary, who was believed to have blessed the Portuguese royals to win in the battle of Aljubarrota against the Moors. What is so admirable about this edifice is that its construction took nearly two centuries! But the result does complete justice to the construction time taken. There is much to admire both from the outside of the church as well as the interiors. It is one of the most impressive Gothic monuments of the time. Situated merely a few kilometers away from this monastery is another gem, the Alcobaça Monastery. To make the most of your trip to this part of the town, ensure that you go for a tour that covers both these historic sites. You will be pleasantly surprised by the similarities and differences that these two monasteries have.
