About Queluz National Palace

Have your fill of its rich culture and history, while in Portugal. Located midway between Sintra and Lisbon, the National Palace of Queluz doesn’t always appear on popular tourists radars. But it is a definite must-see because of its gorgeous architectural structure and interesting history.

An interesting aspect of the palace is that the exterior is sombre while the interior is full of colours and extravagance. The gardens of the palace were inspired by French styles. On the other hand, the interiors reflect a culmination of the architectural designs of Baroque, the Rococo, and Neoclassical styles. In the 18th century, the National Palace of Queluz was the official royal residence of King Consort Pedro III and Queen Maria I. It is surrounded with its share of secrets and stories that add to the allure and charm of the palace.

The King and the Queen were in effect uncle and niece with a 17-year age gap. Irrespective of this, they were said to have lived a happy married life together. It was only after the King’s demise in 1786 that the Queen appeared to show signs of mental instability. This was further worsened when the Queen lost her eldest son, just two years after. Due to her deteriorating condition, the Queen would stay indoors, confined to the “Maria’s Pavilion,” away from the public eyes. There are quite a few more stories of the palace that you don’t want to miss.

In 1910, the National Palace of Queluz was declared a National Monument. Later, in 2013, the Palace was included in the Network of European Royal Residences. Now, how can one resist the temptation of visiting such a renowned and popular edifice?
