About Pena National Palace

Every once in a while, a perfect date with your beloved partner can do wonders to your romantic life. Why not use a tried and tested formula of the experts? Take your beloved on a surprise visit to the Pena National Palace in the beautiful country of Portugal. A haven for couples, this palace is a must-visit attraction.
Also called the Palacio Nacional da Pena, it is located on top of the second-highest point in the hills of Sintra. The palace flanked by two wings – the former Manueline monastery of the Order of St. Jerome, and the wing built by King Ferdinand II in the 19th Century. The former monastery was heavily renovated and rebuilt to the formidable structure that we know today. King Ferdinand had a park set around the palace, which was called the Park of Pena. This garden was inspired by the fashionable romantic style of the time. The style included stone benches and pavilions constructed at numerous points along its route to the Palace, as well as winding pathways. The King had more than 5,000 species of plants and trees from all around the globe set up in this park. The mild and damp climate of the hills played a major role in setting up one of the most exotic gardens. In the Park of Pena, there is the most gorgeous architecture of the Chalet of the Countess of Edla, also known as the House of Indulgence (Casa do Regalo). The King had this private summer residence set up for his future second wife, Elise Hensler (the Countess of Edla).

In 1990, the Palace of Pena was declared a National Monument, while merely after 5 years, it was also included in UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites. Later, in 2013, the Palace was included in the Network of European Royal Residences. If this doesn’t impress you, then we don’t know what will. You don’t want to miss out on an experience of a lifetime.
