About Windsor Castle

The Windsor Castle in Berkshire is the oldest currently lived-in castle in the entire world. Built originally in the 11th century, the castle has seen several reiterations and renovations over the years while always housing British royalty. Spread over thirteen acres, this is where even today the Queen often spends a lot of her time. When visiting the castle, check for the flag that furling at the castle Round Tower. When the Queen is in residence, it will always be the Royal Standard Flag. The areas open to public access change as per the time of the year, so do check what will be available to you when you go. On the castle grounds, you can see the State apartments, the state and semi-state rooms, the moat room, St. George's chapel and the manicured gardens. You can also reach in time to see the changing of the guards ceremony. Depending on the time of the year you're going at, you will find various temporary exhibits about the history and life in the castle. You will also find summer activities for children on the castle grounds to engage them.

Tips

  • The Castle is completely disable friendly with wheelchair accesibility and hearing and visual impaired guides available as well.
  • The Castle is on top of a steep hill and therefore has a lot of walking during this attraction so be prepared for that.
  • There is an airport-style security check on arrival, so carry the least amount of possesions on you.
  • No photography is allowed inside the Castle premises at all. You might be asked to switch off your mobile phone on arrival.
  • No food is allowed in certain areas of the Castle, you will be asked to put away the food and water during those parts. Water is available within the premises and there are cafes in the town within.
  • The Castle still serves as a residence so there may be changes in visiting schedules to accomodate for that.
  • The Castle is full of interesting facts to be discovered so make sure to get a guidebook or follow along on google.
