About Founders of the Bulgarian State Monument

Even when you are 18 miles away from Shumen, you will be able to see the Founders of the Bulgarian State Monument. Some say it is the heaviest communist monument in the world.
The monument is also known as The Monument to 1300 Years of Bulgaria and makes it's stone kings and heroes look like giants. The memorial was built in cubist-style concrete by Bulgarian sculptors. It is actually two separate buildings with small spaces in between.
It depicts the progression and development of the Bulgarian state from its establishment in the 7th century to the modern-day. There are 21 sculptures and Europe’s largest outdoor mosaic-triptych here. Although other communist monuments have been destroyed, this one has been carefully maintained because of the story it tells. The inscriptions even use the different alphabets from across time, from the original runes to the Cyrillic now used by Slavonic nations
Come face-to-face with Bulgaria’s founder and the heroes over the centuries who have made Bulgaria what it is today.
