It is no wonder that the citadel is part of the exceptional heritage of Wallonia. Standing proud atop a hill is the formidable fortress of Citadelle de Namur. This citadel is a popular tourist destination not just in the city, but in the country of Belgium. It represents the military architecture and occupation over several centuries right from the Middle Ages to the 20th Century. In a dynamic educational setting, this history of over 2,000 years sheds light on the culture and societies of the past, present, and future. It is the site of the oldest permanent settlement in the Benelux. In the Middle Ages, it was also used as the residence of Counts of Namur. Over the years, it was rebuilt and renovated under the reign of numerous important rulers, one of them being Napoleon Bonaparte. Ensure that you visit the underground tunnels of the fortress. Lying with the citadel, are the longest underground restored passages, running 500 meters, of the Old Continent. It was said that Napoleon called the tunnels “Europe’s Termite Mound.” You can either walk through the museum on your own or opt for a tour guide.

Take the bus lines 1,3,9,80 which stops at Namur Boulevard Ad Aquam stops from there walk for 5 minutes to reach the place.
Bus lines 10,4,8 also stop nearby to the place and the cost is around 1 to 3 EURO.
By taxi, it will take 4 minutes and the cost is nearly 8 to10 EURO.
Six shuttles (€ 2) run between the train station and Terra Nova on weekends.
