About Nîmes Roman Monuments

For an archaeological adventure, there’s no place like Nîmes. The city is best known for its collection of Roman monuments. Visit the Amphitheatre, still used today. The original would have seated 24,000 spectators. The Maison Carrée is a Roman temple, the only complete one of its kind. The Tour Magne is the only surviving tower of the original city wall and a tower within a tower. There are also two original Roman gates: the Porte de France, and the Porta Augusta.

Be sure to pack your comfortable walking shoes for a self-guided tour. There’s quite a bit of climbing at some of the monuments. You can also take one of the guided tours that will give you the history behind Pont du Gard, to the aqueduct and other monuments. Finish off your visit with a tour of the olive oil mill and vineyards for a taste of Nîmes.
