About Burg Hohenwerfen

On a family vacation and looking for a fun experience for everyone? Look no further, this 900 year old castle in Austria is just the place for you. A medieval castle on a hill constructed using mountain rock, the fortress has the beautiful snow covered Alps all around it. Not only does the castle have impressive chambers that you can walk through, it also has a Falconery and a bird show to catch, and a small Da Vinci exhibition. The bird show will bring you face to face with majestic falcons and eagles, birds that were once integral to this castle's history. The castle was also featured in Hollywood films Agents Die Lonely, Fully Married and the web series The Man in the High Castle.

How to reach

Hohenwerfen adventure castle is located about forty kilometers south of the city of Salzburg and can be reached easily and comfortably by car and by public transport.
The S-Bahn local rail service runs every 30 minutes between the city of Salzburg and Werfen; the journey lasts about 45 minutes. A shaded footpath takes you from the station directly to the adventure castle in around half an hour.
There are also faster regional trains (REX) about every 2 hours and an occasional IC or EC, so about 2 trains per hour. The one-way fare is 12 €. You can do the round trip (except with an IC/EC) on an Einfach-Raus-Ticket for 35€ (2-5 people).

  • There is a gift shop, a restaurant, an interesting guided tour, and a falconry show.
  • There are numerous steps so wear a comfortable pair of shoes.
  • The parking at the Hohenwerfen was free and easy.
  • Sports enthusiasts and nature lovers make their way to the top on foot and one can also take the passenger elevator.
  • Restrooms facilities are there.
  • The guided tour lasts about an hour and the also have audio for other languages.
  • Plan for a half day if you want to see everything.
  • It is a little bit of a hike from the courtyard.
  • Wheelchair-accessible toilets.
