The Château de Fontainebleau was called “the true home of kings, the house of ages” by Napoleon himself. It is the only royal château to have been a continuous residence for eight hundred years. Take the famous horseshoe stairs that date back to King Louis XII and enter an old Renaissance world. The tapestries and furniture on display made it a royal home. Visit the apartments and sleeping quarters of former kings and queens. Marie Antoinette never actually slept in the bed or bedroom specially designed for her. The art collections give the visitor a sense of what the Royals really liked.
Maybe you’ll be able to interpret the meaning of the frescoes in the Francis I Gallery. Let your imagination dance in the ballroom where murals of banquets, hunting and music adorn the walls. Don’t forget to visit one of the four museums, including documents and historical artifacts from Napoleon himself.
