The Popes’ Palace, or Palais des Papes, in Avignon is actually two buildings joined to make one. The old palace built by Pope Benedict XII was built on the rocks, and the second by Pope Clement VI, often seen as the most extravagant. The building is one of the largest Gothic buildings from the Middle Ages remaining in Europe. The library in the Palais is currently the largest papal library in Europe.
Studying could be a reason to go, the ramparts, the little palace, and the cathedral is the real attractions. Educational tours are available, but do explore on your own. Exhibitions are on in the Great Chapel, and festivals take place in the Cour d'Honneur du Palais. Be sure to walk out on the St-Bénezet Bridge, and sing the song Sur le Pont d’Avignon it made famous. New in 2019 are apiaries of beehives which the Palais hopes to open to the public in 2020.
