About Butchart Gardens, BC

The Butchart Gardens aren’t just one garden, they are a group of floral gardens in Brentwood Bay, British Columbia.

The history of the gardens is as endearing as the area itself. The Bucharts, Robert and Jennie, moved from Ontario to British Columbia to mine the limestone deposits for cement production and built their home near their quarry on Vancouver Island. When a Japanese garden designer came to visit Victoria, the Butcharts commissioned him to build one on their estate. When the quarry was empty, they turned it into a garden and opened their home to visitors.

Of course, no garden is complete without birds and birdhouses. They added those, including a parrot, ducks, pigeons, and peacocks.

This garden love story will enchant you. Enter the original Japanese Garden with its maple and beech trees through the Torii gates. The first garden, the Sunken Garden is 5 acres of lush flowerbeds, with a lookout in the middle over the pathways leading to Ross Fountain. The Italian Garden was once the Butchart tennis court, but is now a place for visitors to sit and enjoy a homemade sorbeto or gelato. Or feed the ducks at Star Pond.

Fall head over heels for this little paradise.
