For 6,000 years the Forks was the meeting place for Indigenous peoples, European fur traders, settlers, and pioneers. Today, the Forks, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, is a large community hub on the river with a wide variety of things to do.
The Forks is a 14-acre cultural landscape open to visitors all year. What started as two stables for railway companies have since been joined together with a courtyard and bridges to become The Forks Market. It features a tower with a platform and contains interpretive panels with historical information on the site. Two storeys of the market are where you’ll find fresh fruit, bread, meats, wine, and artisanal creations by local and Canadian artists.
The warehouse portion of The Forks is the Johnson Terminal. It was once the largest warehouse in Winnipeg, with over 100,000 square feet of space. Step inside for unique boutiques, stores, a café, and a bite to eat at The Old Spaghetti Factory. Go browsing for antiques in the Terminal Antique Mall in the basement with 7,000 square feet of a different kind of souvenir to bring home.
It’s not all shopping and food! Kids will love the Manitoba Children’s Museum where they can hop on a real 1952 diesel locomotive, play in the Splash Lab, or explore the lookout. Or even if just a kid at heart, visit the Manitoba Theatre for Young People. It is the only theatre for young people that offers an entire season of productions for teens.
Winnipeg may feel like the coldest place on Earth during the winter months, so bundle up, put on your skates, and glide down the longest skating rink in the world. Start at The Forks and travel down the 5-mile ice trail to the Historic Port where river boats were once welcomed. You’ll be welcome too.
