About Victoria’s Chinatown & Inner Harbour

Victoria’s Chinatown is a maze of alleyways, activity and entertainment reminiscent of China itself. It is the oldest Chinatown in Canada, and the second oldest in North America after San Francisco.

Although it has its roots in the influx of miners in 1858 it has become a popular place to visitors and residents alike. The red, black and gold Gate of Hormonious Interest stands at the entrance on Fisgard Street where you will be transported to a different time and culture. Stop in at one of the restaurants, market shops, theatre, or gambling den.

Off Fisgard Street wander through Fan Tan Alley, the narrowest street in Canada at 35 inches wide. With its dark corners and overhanging eaves used to be the gambling district with opium dens, but is where you’ll now find art galleries, boutiques, and a barber shop.

Follow down Fisgard Street to the Inner Harbour, one of the most beautiful harbours in the world. Go whale watching on one of the many tours, or stay on shore and enjoy the festivals the city has to offer.
