About Athabasca Falls and Glacier

Let yourself be amazed at the creation of a glacier at Athabasca Falls in Alberta. In Wood Cree “Athabasca” means “there are plants one after another.”

The Class 5 waterfall and river wore away the rocks to form the Athabasca Glacier. Here you will want to take a guided tour for a trip along the interpretive trail. Hike on your own, but be sure to stay on the trails.

Explore the lookouts over the canyon from the top, or climb the stairs to see the Falls from the bottom. Hear the roar of the flowing water. Touch the moss, lichen, and trees that even grow out of the narrow cracks in the rock.

The Athabasca River stems from the Columbia Ice Field (see Banff National Park). Depending on what type of rock flour there is in the water, the river “changes color” when the sunlight hits it. Bring your binoculars and your camera for those rare sightings of the Canyon Sprite.
