About Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde National Park, located in southwest Colorado was the first protected park of its kind. With more than 5,000 sites, including 600 cliff dwellings, it is the largest and best-preserved archeological location in the United States. The site was built by the Ancestral Puebloan people, where they lived for about 700 years. Archeologists have uncovered cliff dwellings, pit houses, pueblos, masonry towers, and farming structures.

Mesa Verde ("green table" in Spanish) is best known for structures such as Cliff Palace, thought to be the largest cliff dwelling in North America. Other notable dwellings are the Balcony House, Step House, Long House, and Spruce Tree House. Square Tower House has the park’s tallest tower, at 28 feet. Take the Soda Canyon Overlook Trail, the Spruce Canyon Trail, or the Point Lookout Trail for memorable views of the park. Stop in at the Cortez Cultural Center for a dose of Native American arts, dance, and poetry.
