About Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

The Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park was created to preserve the Kīlauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes. Mauna Loa boasts a height of 13,677 feet above sea level and is the world’s largest mountain with a volume of almost 20 square miles. If you include the height of Mauna Loa beneath the water, it’s taller than even Mount Everest. The volcanoes produce fluid and gaseous eruptions and rivers of molten lava instead of the explosive eruptions typically associated with regular volcanoes. Although you wouldn’t think there’s wildlife in a barren volcanic landscape, hundreds of species of wildlife and plants have found their way across the pacific.

The park is a refuge for the island’s plants and animals. You might be lucky and catch a glimpse of two almost extinct animals, the hono’eu (Hawaiian hawksbill turtle), and the nēnē (Hawaiian Banta goose). Visitors are encouraged to understand and appreciate the native resources. Be reminded of the beauty and strength, and the power of natural processes of the world we live in.
