About Palais Garnier

The National Opera, the largest opera house in Europe was built in the style of the Second Empire. It is an architectural masterpiece and is an exuberantly refined, excellent amalgam of pomp, and eclecticism. A working theatre to its present-day, It hosts operas, ballet, and chamber music performances throughout the year.

The place is a heavenly work of art in itself with a stunning facade and a great art collection. A major draw, the ceiling rotunda painted by Clairin and called Rotunda du Glacier depicts the dancing bacchantes and fauna. Directly behind it, is the Bassin de la Pythia which leads to the Grand Escalier and the impressive thirty-meter-high marble vault. This leads to the double staircase that conveys one to the foyers and to the various floors of the theatre. Research students can gain immensely from the vast collection at the museum cum library. All in all, it is a treasure trove in itself.
