About Coricancha, Temple of the Sun

Coricancha or Qorikancha, "Temple of the Sun of the Incas",  was the most important temple of the Incan Empire, and is the most revered temple in Cusco. When the Spaniards came they built the Church of Santo Domingo by demolishing the temple and using the available foundation for the cathedral. During the Incan era, Qorikancha was the religious, geographical, and political center of Cusco. Maximum homage to the Incan God "Inti" (Sun) was paid here. "Qori" means gold. "Kancha" means an enclosed space, bounded by walls. Hence the meaning of the name Qorikancha reads as "place that has gold."
