The Theatre District is in the heart of Manhattan. Within its 17 blocks, the Theater District has undergone many transformations over the past century. The area was known as the home for history-making families such as the Astors and the Rockefellers. The Theatre District was officially named in the square, in 1903, as the original headquarters of the New York Times. It is home to the Broadway and is now a thriving business district.
The Times Square-42nd St. subway station is one of the major centers of public transit in New York, with the Grand Central Shuttle Lines No. 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W and S all stopping there. To the south of Times Square, the 1, 2, and 3 lines run under 7th Avenue, the A, C and E lines run under 8th Avenue, the N, Q, R, and W lines run under Broadway, and the B, D, F and M lines run under 6th Avenue, with these lines stop at 34th Street, near Penn Station.
